School of Public Health’s 2023 Advocacy Day at the Nevada Legislature

The School of Public Health’s 2023 Advocacy Day at the Nevada Legislature is on April 6, 2023.

We encourage you to join us at the Legislative Building in Carson City to observe the process and share information with legislators and committees about the School, public health generally, and our students.

Below are options for participating, the tentative agenda, and additional information. Please review the list below and let me know by March 15 if you plan to participate, ride the bus, or if you are interested in sitting with a legislator in the Senate/Assembly chambers during the floor session, or scheduling one or more meetings with legislator(s).

SPH Advocacy Day Activities

• Sit with a legislator (as his or her guest) in the Senate or Assembly Chamber during the floor session to observe the legislative process from a legislator’s perspective
  • If you would like to sit with a legislator please provide your zip code (and/or if you want to sit with a specific legislator, let me know)
• Observe the Senate or Assembly floor session from the gallery above the Senate/Assembly Chambers
• Observe one or more committee meetings and bill hearings
  • If you plan to provide testimony or public comment, please indicate the topic and bill(s), if known
• Meet with legislators to discuss the School of Public Health, the importance of public health generally, or a specific bill
  • If you would like to meet with a specific legislator or legislators, please indicate who. The UNR Government Affairs team is scheduling meetings on our behalf.
• Conduct a “demonstration” of public health (e.g. naloxone distribution and education)
  • If you would like to conduct a demonstration of public health, please let me know what you would like to do.
• Staff a SPH table (Larson Institute, DEER, CASAT, SPH general; requires coordination with center directors)

In addition, students are invited to share posters (new or relatively recent); please encourage their participation.

Bus from UNR to the Legislative Building in Carson City

The School of Public Health will provide a bus from UNR (departure location TBD) to the Legislative Building in Carson City. The bus will depart UNR promptly at 10 am and return at approximately 3 pm. Participants are not required to ride the bus. If you ride the bus, please note the options for participation highlighted in grey in the tentative agenda below.

Pizza lunch will  be provided to all SPH representatives in attendance around noon or 12:30 pm.

Training and Additional Information

Additional information will follow for those who plan to participate, as will a virtual training on Friday, March 31, 2023, at noon. (A recording will be available to those unable to attend the live training.)
