Educational Audience: Primarily attorneys (both prosecutors and defense attorneys), and clinicians to expand the understanding of the criminal justice system and the ways in which it can help clients.

  • After the training, the participant(s) will have knowledge of: The benefits of factoring mental illness into the prosecution of criminal defendants. Techniques for effectively reducing recidivism in criminal defendants with mental health needs.
  • The participant(s) can apply this information to: Prosecution of criminal defendants with mental illness and mental health needs. Some applicability to defense of defendants with mental illness and mental health needs.
  • Participant(s) will better understand: Factors to consider when prosecuting defendants with mental illness. Techniques for formulating appropriate plea offers in the context of mental illness. Suggestions regarding the sentencing of mentally ill criminal defendants who violate probationary terms.
