To support a cohesive recovery community and addiction field services, there needs to be alignment. The treatment model for addiction has evolved with time. There are multiple pathways to recovery for substance use disorder. As treatment for addiction has changed and grown, there is a need for peer to peer participatory process. The outlook on addiction is still strongly negative in areas of the world. Sometimes, even in our own field, there is tension on what is the right treatment for an individual with substance use disorder. To have healthy options for peers to get the help they need without discriminating each other is very important.

- Better understand the history of addiction treatment and recovery in America as it relates to the importance of peer support services.
- Explain how the peer recovery model has evolved over time.
- Be prepared to deal with and counteract the effects of discrimination against people with substance use disorder.
- Propose the next steps for the field of addiction/recovery and have a participatory process for solutions.

Presenters
John Shinholser is the President of The McShin Foundation, which was founded in 2004. He is also the Co-Founder of CARE Talks, LLC. Shinholser is a United States Marine Corps veteran. In 2005, he received the prestigious America Honors Recovery Award from the Johnson Institute — one of six recognized individuals who have been affected by substance use disorder and have given back to their communities so that future generations may know the possibility and power of recovery. Other awards he has received include the Caron Foundation’s Outstanding Alumni Award and the Virginia Office of Substance Abuse Services Award of Virginia for significant contributions to the field of recovery. Shinholser has been featured in Addiction Professional Magazine, Newsweek, The Richmond Times Dispatch, The Mechanicsville Local, Richmond Free Press, and Virginia Association of Community Service Boards 2005 Annual Report. He also has been in many news broadcasts including Face the Nation and national documentaries such as “The Anonymous People”.
Honesty Liller, CPRS, is a woman in long-term recovery from substance use disorder since May 27, 2007. She is the Chief Executive Officer of The McShin Foundation, a non-profit peer-to-peer recovery community organization (RCO) that serves individuals and families with substance use disorders. Liller is the 2015 recipient of the Faces and Voices of Recovery Vernon Johnson Award. She was also awarded the Stettinius Fund honor from The Community Foundation, which she used to complete Stanford University’s Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders and The Community Foundation’s Emerging Nonprofit Leader Program. In 2019, she was honored with the Jean C. Harris Community Service Board Award from Hanover County. Liller is also Co-Founder of CARE Talks, LLC. She is an RCO site reviewer for CAPRSS and does technical assistance projects with Faces and Voices of Recovery. Liller was also featured on Face the Nation discussing addiction and recovery in America.
